My name is Michellas Baca and I am a multimedia entertainment journalist from Las Vegas, Nevada. I have a passion for exploring, not only music but as well as its cultural impact. I graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Masters in Journalism and Media Studies in May of 2026, after receiving a BA in English in 2023. I have a deep love for radio broadcasting, live hosting, as well as interviewing artist and unique people.
Â
I am a bilingual latina, who has a passion for alternative and new wave music, so much so I dedicated my master's program to it. I studied Chicano, punk/new wave music and culture in Los Angeles, California for my thesis. I created a multimedia zine from scratch using Adobe Creative Suite, that made use of hyperlinks to create an interactive experience for readers. For my project, I filmed and interviewed recording Chicano artists in the punk scene. Alongside those interviews, I did extensive research not only on the artists and their music, but the history that went along with it all. This did include highlighting impactful places and focusing on influential movements, for example the Brown Power Movement of the 60s. Through my project, I learned how to reach out and talk to influential people. I also had a chance to strengthen my passion for telling stories that help to represent a community while finding ways to be creative about it. My goal was to tell a story about culture through music. I grew as a music journalist from this experience.

I have also in the past written for somosLIFE (Latinos in Film & Entertainment), so I am very familiar with talking about pop culture globally. I learned how to work with quick turn-arounds, researching and generating topical stories that readers are interested in. I also currently have an internship at Varsity Sports Show. There, I am an on-air personality for their sports radio show that airs on 1060AM KDUS, the host for the pop culture news segment which airs live on Streamyard Thursday nights and a live field correspondent on Friday nights at high school football games. I am used to working on a tight schedule with deadlines, researching and working with a team of journalists, while being a part of a brand’s identity. Through this experience, I’ve been able to strengthen my skills in broadcasting and further developing my skills as an entertainment and sports news reporter. I have interviewed Mrs. Arizona and talked to her about her philanthropy and double amputee motorcyclist, Kimberly Mathes-Chavez at Varsity Sports Show. This has given me the skills to perform subject research, while working with my co-host to generate questions and guide our conversations. I have also in the past managed social media for local business, radio stations and podcast companies. My work in social media and blog writing goes all the back to my undergrad years when I worked as a Social Media Manager at Rebel Media Group while blogging for IHeartRadio and Kalifano. Over the summer in 2026, I helped manage social media for a jewelry store, call Iceberg Diamonds. These experiences have given me the foundation to become a well-rounded multimedia journalist.
Â
However, my favorite project will always be my radio show I created during my graduate program. At KUNV, I hosted a show on campus called The Switch, where I play New Wave and Indie music with the goal to keep music lovers up to date on news. I had full control of the broadcast, as I wrote the script, picked the themes and hand curated the playlist. I have continued The Switch as a blog which is linked above. A podcast is currently in the works, which I am so excited about and eager to share.
Â
Throughout my time in both academia and professionally, I have developed a set of skills that would make me a valuable member of any team. I am very familiar with creating content, writing blogs/articles, hosting podcasts/radio shows, and leading a broadcast, all while maintaining a brand’s identity. I have a passion for music and entertainment, which has developed into wanting to connecting with an audience through the use of various journalistic outlets. I want to create a community through a shared love for music, popculture and subcultures.

Overall, I would love to continue to grow as a multimedia entertainment journalist. I have dedicated the last two years studying to strengthen my skills as a journalist and to gain more hands-on experience. I now have experience, not only in broadcasting, script writing, and reporting; but also editing, social media and videography.
